W2C Grows to 52 StudentsWaukegan to College orientation

Through W2C’s efforts during the 2010-11 school year:

  • 5 students completed their first year of college
  • 5 students graduated and are going to college this fall
  • 1 student was inducted into the National Honor Society
  • 3 students were placed on the high honor roll
  • 4 students were placed on the honor roll (two made honor roll for the very first time in their lives)

Waukegan to College students, families, staff, and volunteers worked hard:

  • 90 hours of one-on-one counseling
  • 7 Saturday workshops
  • 1 group visit to 2 college campuses
  • 1 group service project—Feed My Starving Children
  • Over 400 hours of tutoring
  • Added a Read to Achieve program
  • Added a six-week summer math & English program

Waukegan to College logoW2C is a targeted program  that helps parents and students understand and prepare for college.

W2C parents and students:

  • Learn about college-readiness programs available in and around Waukegan and get help enrolling
  • Get monthly counseling to stay on track for college – getting good grades, taking the right courses…
  • Take group and individual field trips to colleges
  • Attend workshops by experts in college preparedness
  • Get individualized college counseling – selecting schools to consider, completing applications, applying for financial aid, campus visits

In addition, W2C students:

  • Take ACT test prep training courses
  • Receive tutoring in the subjects they’re struggling with
  • Work with a mentor to help them stay on track through high school and in college

Waukegan to College was founded by Lake County United, a broad based citizens organization composed of 38 churches, synagogues, mosques, and nonprofit organizations that work to improve the quality of life of Lake County’s residents. Generous support for W2C is provided by Episcopal Charities and Community Services and the Metropolitan Chicago Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
